The RIAA and MPAA have collectively spent millions lobbying congress to pass laws in their favour.

In addition to this, the copyright industries have waged what amounts to a propaganda campaign to spread their views on intellectual property. This can be seen in the FBI warnings that preclude DVD rentals, to Public Service Announcements that compare music downloading to shoplifting.

Most recently, the campaign has escalated in Hong Kong, where Boy Scouts have been recruited to snitch on their friends and family. The MPAA recently imported the campaign and worked with the Los Angeles Boy Scouts to create an activity badge in "respecting copyrights".
